The Scenesters: Embracing “The Ride”

It’s been a wild couple of months for The Scenesters, the indie-rock quartet from Corby who are making waves far beyond their hometown. With two awards snagged at the Corby Music Awards, a gig at the iconic Craufurd Arms in Milton Keynes under their belt, and the release of their brand-new single The Ride all happening in January alone, 2025 is already looking phenomenal for this group of young musicians.

We caught up with the lads back in December at The Shire Horse pub in Corby – a night that now feels like a prelude to everything that’s followed. When I asked them what inspires their music, there was a pause, as if the answer wasn’t something they could simply pin down. But in a way, that’s what makes them so captivating. Their music doesn’t feel calculated; it feels natural, a true reflection of who they are.

“Honestly, it’s like it just happens,” said Zak, the band’s lyricist. “I’ll write the words, but it’s not until we’re all in a room together that it really becomes something. That’s when it clicks.”

For anyone who’s caught their live shows, it’s clear that their synergy is what sets them apart. They’re not just a band; they’re a unit, feeding off each other’s energy and pushing their sound further. Since Drew joined on bass, the dynamic has reached a new level. “It’s like he’s the missing piece,” Bradley and Hugo both added. “He’s brought something we didn’t even realise we needed, but now it’s like, how did we ever play without him?”

The Ride: A Story Told in Song

Released today, January 22, The Ride is The Scenesters at their best – poetic, raw, and packed with an irresistible indie-rock pulse. The track is a lyrical journey through self-discovery and fleeting connections. Lines like “Will you use me as an image to remind you of a song that I couldn’t write” encapsulate the bittersweet beauty of moving forward while holding onto the echoes of the past.

Musically, The Ride is a perfect example of their evolution as a band. It combines driving rhythms and atmospheric guitars with a vocal delivery that feels both vulnerable and powerful. It’s a track that begs to be played live – sung loud, arms in the air, surrounded by people who just get it.

From Corby to the World

For a band that started out playing covers as teenagers, The Scenesters have come a long way. Their sound has been described as a fusion of The Smiths’ lyricism with Arctic Monkeys’ energy, but their recent material proves they’re carving out a voice entirely their own.

“I think what’s mad is that we’re just four mates doing what we love,” said Zak. “But then you see people singing your lyrics back at you, or you play a venue like the Craufurd Arms, and you think – this is real. People actually care about what we’re doing.”

And people do care. From the heartfelt comments on their social media to the packed-out shows, The Scenesters have built a loyal following. But for them, it’s not about chasing fame.
